Zenbo Seinei is a retreat nestled in a tranquil, natural mountain setting. This unique Japanese facility, offering experiences in English, has become increasingly popular among international visitors.

This time, a group of 28 travelers from the United States visited Zenbo Seinei as part of a 10-day Japanese cultural tour. After exploring spiritual sites such as Mount Kurama, Kyoto’s temples, and temple lodgings in Mount Koya, they sought a special experience to “rejuvenate the mind and body” at Zenbo Seinei with a 4-hour lunch plan.

The group of 28 arrived by large bus, disembarking directly in front of the facility. Participants captured memories with photos before entering the building.

❚ Welcome Drink & Introduction (11:00)

Guests were welcomed with a soothing drink. As their tour entered its second week, the combination of three-year-aged bancha tea, plum paste, and nuts provided a perfect remedy for travel fatigue. The gentle aroma, slight bitterness, and refreshing tang rejuvenated both mind and body, setting the tone for the special experience ahead.

Following this relaxing moment, the group leader introduced Zenbo Seinei. The program for the day was then explained by the staff in English.

Guests were guided through the facility, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Shigeru Ban. The one-of-a-kind wooden structure, crafted from domestically sourced timber, harmonizes seamlessly with the surrounding forest. The 100-meter-long wooden deck made from Japanese cedar is ingeniously designed to allow the wind to flow through, offering a chance to savor the sounds of nature.

❚ ZEN Wellness（11:30）

The experience began on the ZEN Deck, a serene setting for meditation and yoga. This time allowed participants to disconnect from external distractions and immerse themselves in stillness.

Sitting in ergonomic retreat chairs designed to support a meditative posture, guests—unaccustomed to sitting cross-legged—were able to fully focus on introspection. The meditation chairs can accommodate groups of up to 40 people simultaneously.

❚ Zenbo Cuisine (12:45)

After an hour of wellness activities, the group enjoyed Zenbo Seinei’s signature lunch. This plant-based meal is free of animal products, refined sugar, oil, dairy, and wheat flour. Seasonings used are traditionally crafted over one to three years, bringing out the pure essence of the ingredients.

Guests were free to enjoy their meals anywhere in the facility, including areas surrounded by nature, adding a unique touch to the dining experience.

The program concluded with another meditation session on the ZEN Deck. This time, participants engaged in “walking meditation,” strolling quietly on the deck, feeling connected to nature and their inner selves in this reflective moment.
